German Language Curriculum

(Classes 6-10)

Phase 1: Foundation (Class 6 & 7) – Level A1.1

Focus: Fun, Phonetics, and Basic Interaction.

  • Greetings & Basics: Formal vs. informal greetings (Du vs. Sie), numbers (0–100), and the German alphabet/phonetics.

  • Food & Hobbies: Likes/dislikes, ordering at a café, and talking about weekend activities.

  • Grammar Foundation: Definite/Indefinite articles (der, die, das), conjugation of weak verbs, and the essential verbs sein (to be) and haben (to have).

Phase 2: Transition (Class 8) – Level A1.2

Focus: Expanding Vocabulary and Sentence Complexity.

  • Home & Surroundings: Describing your house/room and household chores.

  • Health & Body: Naming body parts and expressing "I have a headache" (Ich habe Kopfschmerzen).

  • Shopping & Clothing: Colors, clothing items, and expressing preferences.

  • Geography: Talking about German-speaking countries (D-A-CH), weather, and seasons.

  • Grammar Expansion: Accusative Case (Direct objects), modal verbs (können, müssen, wollen), and separable verbs (aufstehen, fernsehen).

Phase 3: Proficiency (Class 9) – Level A2.1

Focus: Past Tense and Daily Life Narratives.

  • Travel & Transport: Booking a train ticket, asking for directions, and holiday experiences.

  • Media & Technology: Discussing internet use, social media, and favorite films.

  • Environment: Nature, recycling, and simple environmental protection.

  • Past Events: Talking about childhood and past holidays.

  • Grammar Depth: Dative Case (Indirect objects), Perfect Tense (Conversational past), and prepositions of place and time.

Phase 4: Advanced Application (Class 10) – Level A2.2

Focus: Preparation for Board Exams and Future Vocational Tracks.

  • Career & Ambitions: Jobs, future plans, and "Why I am learning German."

  • Culture & Festivals: Detailed study of German traditions (Oktoberfest, Christmas markets) compared to Indian festivals.

  • Exchange Programs: Writing formal/informal emails and letters.

  • Debate & Opinion: Expressing viewpoints on simple social topics.

  • Advanced Grammar: Reflexive verbs, Subordinate clauses (weil, dass, wenn), and Introduction to the Präteritum (Written past tense).

Expected Outcomes

By the end of Class 10, a student will:

  1. Communicate comfortably in routine tasks.

  2. Understand the main points of clear, standard German speech.

  3. Be eligible to sit for the Goethe-Zertifikat A2.
