Curriculum: The 4 Steps to Success

Understanding the IELTS Framework

The IELTS exam is a comprehensive assessment divided into four specialized modules. While the content for Academic and General Training differs in certain areas, the overall structure remains consistent.

1. The Four Pillars of the Test

  • 🎧 Listening: Identical for both Academic and General tracks.

  • 📖 Reading: Passages vary based on your chosen module (Academic vs. General).

  • ✍️ Writing: Tasks are specialized for either university entry or workplace contexts.

  • 🗣️ Speaking: A universal, face-to-face interview format for all candidates.

2. Exam Logistics & Timing

  • Total Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes.

  • The Main Session: You will complete Listening, Reading, and Writing back-to-back in a single sitting without any breaks.

  • The Speaking Interview: This is held separately. It may take place on the same day as your written exams or up to seven days before or after, depending on your test center’s schedule

Your IELTS Results & Scoring Guide

1. When will I get my results?

The delivery time for your scores depends on the format of the test you chose:

  • Computer-Delivered IELTS: Fast results, typically available within 3 to 5 days.

  • Paper-Based IELTS: Your results are officially released 13 days after your test date.

2. Understanding the 0–9 Band Scale

IELTS does not have a "pass" or "fail" mark. Instead, you are given a score from 0 to 9 based on your performance. Each level (or "Band") describes your ability to use English:

  • Band 9 (Expert): You have full command of the language and speak fluently.

  • Band 7–8 (Very Good/Good): You handle complex language well with only minor errors.

  • Band 6 (Competent): You can communicate effectively in most everyday situations.

  • Band 1–5: You have various levels of limited communication ability.

Pro Tip: Every university or employer sets their own "minimum" requirement. For most global opportunities, a score between 6.0 and 7.5 is the target.

3. What is a Test Report Form (TRF)?

The Test Report Form (TRF) is your official IELTS certificate. It is a highly secure document that shows:

1. Your individual scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

2. Your Overall Band Score (the average of all four sections).

3. Your photo and personal details for security.

4. How is the Final Score Calculated?

Your overall score is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

  • Example: If your average is 6.25, it gets rounded up to 6.5.

  • Example: If your average is 6.75, it gets rounded up to 7.0.
